Top 4 Games of 1971: Oregon

In fact, this is the first version of one of the most popular computer educational games in history, especially in the USA, because there it was included in the educational program.

That game was released in 1985 and had a graphical interface, this version is exclusively text. Therefore, I found a visual for it only for the Atari 8-bit platform (1982). But at first, of course, it came out on the mainframe computer platform. Other platforms: Apple II (1978), Sol-20 (1978).

The game should primarily train strategic thinking, the ability to plan. But there is a rather large influence of randomness here.

Although the original concept of the game itself was developed at the end of 1971 by three teachers from Minnesota, it was intended for a teletype. The Teletype Model 33 was mainly used. But this year it was used only in the lesson of Don Ravich, who taught at Carleton College.

Further, it was transferred from paper records to MECC computer systems in 1974 and it became available to school systems throughout the state of Minnesota.

A notable feature of the game was that by setting the initial conditions, you chose the complexity of the game. That is, one month for the start was easier for the consequences in the future than the other. Some character classes, such as a doctor, were safer to play. You also chose which supplies to take with you.

And then you moved along a certain route and chose where to make a halt, where to hunt and how to react to random events, among which there were such bad ones as: an attack by raiders or bad weather.

The text version was somewhat flattened in comparison with the graphic one. For example, here you could not give a name and control the members of your party, only the leader, after whose death the game ended. If you also think that the games deserve a story, then we like, comment, and repost.
